Shalimar Philtre de Perfume, Guerlain tells us about a legend from India

Shalimar Philtre de Perfume, a new sensuality blows on the legendary Guerlain perfume

A true breath of love, Shalimar perfumes came out in 1925. An olfactory interpretation of eternal love, it never ceases to be talked about. Symbol of the Roaring Twenties, it plunges us into a past era while still being fully relevant. Undoubtedly, it is one of the greatest bestsellers in feminine perfumery, initially designed by Jacques Guerlain. A tribute to an Indian legend, he delivers a new chapter in his history. Now, in 2020, it is called Shalimar Philtre de Perfume, for an equally sensual look but more powdery than in the past.

Guerlain tells us an Indian legend

The Guerlain family has always been deeply inspired by the Orient. Thus, many of his perfumes are inspired by this distant land. Shalimar Philtre de Parfum is no exception to the rule. It takes us back to the 17th century, when India’s emperor Shah Jahan. Madly in love with his wife Mumtaz Mahal, he liked to walk with her in the gardens of Shalimar. Then, when she died giving birth to one of their children, he was devastated by sadness. He then decided to have him build the most beautiful mausoleum in these magical gardens. Today world famous, the building is called the Taj Mahal. However, it is precisely from this romance that Shalimar Philtre de Parfum is inspired.

A bottle thought of as a fountain in Shalimar’s garden

Shalimar Philtre de Parfum comes in a bottle whose shape is identical to that of its predecessors. As a reminder, this was developed in 1925 by Raymond Guerlain, in collaboration with the Baccarat house. Forming a basin on a chiseled foot, it is inspired by the water gushing out of a fountain in the gardens of Shalimar. Moreover, its midnight blue cap also evokes the volutes of water. A small golden tassel bearing the initials of Guerlain is attached to its collar by a black leather tie. The only real difference with its elders: its color is lighter today than in the past. With an amber fragrance, Shalimar Philtre de Parfum is now tinged with a pale yellow.

The powdery breath of Shalimar Philtre de Parfum

On the scent side, if Shalimar Philtre de Parfum incorporates several elements of its predecessor, it is indeed different. Developed by Thierry Wasser, it opens again with fresh top notes of bergamot. However, its tangy bitterness is airy here with lemon, while being accompanied by a more Mediterranean and aromatic lavender. The iris then comes to occupy the heart of this perfume, showing itself to be both floral and earthy, and accompanied by rose and jasmine. Then, little by little, Shalimar Philtre de Parfum blossoms in a more leathery and animal breath. Vanilla and coumarin complement this composition, while revealing its creamy and syrupy glow. Finally, Shalimar Philtre de Parfum ends with a trail of Tolu balm, patchouli and benzoin.
